Philip Glass - Prophecies
DEFINE NECESSITY
Probably the most beautiful and haunting track from Glass's sublime soundtrack to Godfrey Reggio's groundbreaking 1982 movie 'Koyaanisqatsi'. The prophecies of the Hopi tribe of Native Americans are sung in baritone over a simple recurring thme played on a church organ. The title of the movie, a Hopi word, means 'life out of balance' and the movie sought to show how it is happening as mankind veers further away from the natural world. Ironically, the biggest casualty is mankind itself. In a world where human life has less value than money, power and oil.......what price human dignity?

Fabio Concato - Breve sogno (1977)
Ho costruito la mia casa,
gli ho fatto un piccolo cortile
ho l'orto, due galline, un cane ed un porcile
dalla mia stanza vedo il mare,
conosco tutti i pescatori,
la notte al largo con la torcia li vedo andare.
All'alba poi facciam baratto
io porto vino ed insalata,
mi danno un po' del loro pesce
il resto andrà al mercato.
Quand'ho finito il mio lavoro
mi porto un libro sulla spiaggia,
ricopro poi le buche del mio cane con la sabbia.
Ha sempre voglia di giocare
gli parlo spesso e ci intendiamo
poi corre su uno scoglio,
vuol giocare con un gabbiano.
Io sto a guardarlo dalla riva,
si volta, l'impotenza nei suoi occhi, mi guarda, mi chiede:
"fammi volare", arreso torna indietro a testa bassa,
ma riprende subito a giocare.
Andiamo a casa specie di cristiano,
il mare si è accoppiato con il sole
se l'è ingoiato tutto e fan l'amore;
dobbiamo rientrare.
Stanco e sereno sopra il letto,
punto la sveglia, dormo, attendo l'alba;
mi chiama un pescatore dal cortile:
la caccia è andata bene.
Ho aperto gli occhi, è stato un sogno,
rumori di ferri d'officina;
certo, la mia realtà è diversa, qui non c'è il mare
e i pescatori, e poi non c'è il mio cane
